How to Point Your Email to Another Provider (MX Records)

Use Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or another mail service with your hosted website.

← Help Center

Your domain’s MX records decide which server receives its email. If you use an outside email service but keep your website with us, you’ll update the MX records in cPanel.

1. Get the records from your email provider

Your email provider’s setup guide lists the MX record(s) to use, each with a priority number. Have those handy.

2. Update the MX records

  1. Log in to cPanel and open Domains → Zone Editor.
  2. Next to your domain, click Manage, then filter by MX.
  3. Edit or delete the existing MX record and add the ones from your provider, with their priorities.
  4. Save each record.

3. Tell the server mail is handled elsewhere

  1. Open Email → Email Routing.
  2. Choose your domain and select Remote Mail Exchanger.
  3. Click Change.

Without this step, messages sent from your website (like contact forms) to addresses at your own domain may be delivered locally instead of to your outside mailbox.

Tip: DNS changes can take a few hours to reach everyone. Keep your old mailboxes until mail is clearly arriving at the new provider.

Switching back

To receive mail on your Electric Kitten hosting again, restore the original MX record in Zone Editor and set Email Routing back to Local Mail Exchanger. Not sure what the original record was? Open a ticket and we’ll fix it for you.
