How to Use the cPanel File Manager

Upload, edit and organize your website files right in your browser.

← Help Center

The File Manager lets you work with your website’s files without installing any software.

Open the File Manager

  1. Log in to cPanel and open Files → File Manager.
  2. Your website lives in the public_html folder. Double-click it to open it.

Common tasks

  • Upload: click Upload in the toolbar and drag files into the window.
  • Upload a whole site: zip it on your computer, upload the .zip, then right-click it and choose Extract.
  • Edit a file: right-click it and choose Edit.
  • See hidden files such as .htaccess: click Settings (top right) and tick Show Hidden Files (dotfiles).
  • Change permissions: right-click a file and choose Change Permissions. Files are usually 644 and folders 755.

Tip: Deleted files go to the File Manager’s Trash until you empty it, so you can restore something removed by mistake.
